Non-stick or Teflon pans can, and have been used in everyday cooking. But can they be distinguished from other pans? What makes a pan or cookware Teflon?

WHAT IS A TEFLON PAN?

To answer this question, one must at least try to understand or even know the meaning of Teflon. This is because Teflon pans and cookware are in fact made from Teflon. So what is Teflon? Teflon is a firm artificial organic polymer used to make or coat the bottoms of cooking utensils also to produce seals, bearings and other products.

Apparently, the main attribute of Teflon is its toughness and high temperature resistance which makes it ideal to withstand the heat and extensive use that cooking involves hence why it would probably be the ideal choice for making cooking utensils.

But this is not the only reason why it is used to make cooking utensils. One property and nature of Teflon (polytetrafluoroethylene) is that it does not socialize with anything other than itself.

This means that it does not interact with food like other metal-based kitchen utensils so food doesn’t stick on Teflon. The friction that should support the sticking of food on the kitchen utensils is absent when they are coated with Teflon.

Normally, cookware needs a bit of oil or butter to reduce the friction so that food does not stick. However, with non-stick or Teflon pans you do not need oil or butter as the food would not be able to stick to the bottom of the cookware.

So Teflon pans are basically cookware that has been coated with Teflon to prevent food from sticking to the bottom of the pans. This is scientifically feasible considering that the Teflon would bond with the pan but not bond with the food.

HOW DO YOU IDENTIFY A TEFLON PAN?

If you have never actually paid attention to the comparisons to non-stick pans and regular pans then you may not notice the subtle differences between the both of them. You can simply toss the pan into the dishwasher and it will be washed and ready for use.

Teflon pans do not require cooking with oil

Most foods are cooked with oil or butter not because it is required but simply because it is necessary to reduce friction between the surface of the pan and the food. It is possible to cook a dish completely without having to use any oil and butter. This is ideal if you want to eat healthy. Teflon pans simply make it possible to cook without oil or butter.

However, other minor scratches that could arise during cooking would not show on the Teflon pan because the Teflon is tough and can go for a very long time without having any scratches unlike other pans. This resistance to scratches is one of the reasons why Teflon pans are way more durable than the other utensils.
