How Do You Bake(safely) With Glass?

 It’s not like we don’t know why you may prefer using glassware in your oven; they are optimized to look sleek and shiny. They help you to make smart food presentations that go well with other glassware. Only a tiny little matter remains: how to bake safely with glass. 

If you plan on baking with glass, this tip may be useful:

  • Avoid Putting hot glassware on a cool surface, a surface with droplets of water, or in a cold environment.
  • Always use a potholder to hold the hot glass bakeware. However, if you don’t have one, you can place it on a dry, cloth or towel. Placing them anywhere else: stovetop, counter, sink, or metal trivet can bring them in contact with a cold substance which can make the hot glass shatter or crack.  
  • Avoid putting glassware in contact with open flames, on hot burners or under a broiler.

At What Temperature Will Glass Break In The Oven?

 Glass may look crystalline but they’re actually amorphous. What this means is that the molecules are not arranged in an orderly fashion and come in different shapes and sizes. It is for this reason that glass will unevenly expand or contract and eventually shatter under rapidly changing temperatures.

With all the right conditions in place, your glassware is more likely to melt rather than break, and the reason is simple: as long as the heat in the oven is uniform all around, the glass will expand evenly; no cracks, no shattering. 

If you preheat an oven at about 400°F and then place your glassware into it, it will just get hot until about 900°F when it starts to become a little bit soft. We wouldn’t advise you to try this at home though. 

That said, it is not the high temperature that shatters glass per se, but a possible defect or rapid temperature changes. That’s why you must preheat your oven before placing your oven-safe glassware in it.

Can I Bake In Pyrex At 450°F?

Yes, pyrex can be used in the oven at temperatures as high as 450°F without issues. They are oven-friendly and can withstand the heat of your oven, be it standard or convection.

Admittedly, the glass cookware industry has gradually phased out borosilicate for oven-safe glass production. Borosilicate glass will typically resist high temperature and mechanical damage well. Since the transition to soda-lime for making ovenware, the heat resistance of ovenware can be argued to have reduced.

Nonetheless, better research and production processes in the glass-making industry have seen the rise of glassware better suited for the oven. Hence, you will come across ovenware made with soda-lime, having superior heat-resistant properties. In one sentence: yes, you can bake in pyrex at 450°F regardless of the material composition of the glass; just make sure it is classified oven-safe.
